Havanese
Health
The
North Star Havanese Club encourages all club members to health test their
Havanese. By screening for health problems it enables breeders to take
preventative or early actions to combat a problem.
Whether you
are looking for a Havanese as a family pet, a performance dog, or a breed
champion, it is extremely important to be familiar with the health issues
in Havanese. It is equally important to ask breeders to provide as much
information as possible about health problems known to affect their lines
(or pedigrees). There are no "clear lines". That is why health
testing is so important.
Don't be afraid
to ask questions! A reputable breeder will not hesitate to provide answers
about health issues. Be sure to get copies of the health certifications
of the sire and dam of any puppy being considered. If purchasing an older
dog, ask about health history and copies of that dogs health certifications.
Despite a
breeder's best efforts and regardless of the line, pedigree, certifications
and family history, problems do occur. The Havanese Club of America
has the most comprehensive compilation of information relating to health
issues and health research concerning the Havanese. Please visit Havanese
Health to learn more about health issues in our breed.
For pedigree research there
is a yahoo group dedicated to collecting and providing information that
can be helpful in researching pedigrees. To join please see the link below.
